  • Soil type: The soil type will determine how well the water drains. If you have sandy soil, like most of us in Florida water drain through quickly. The extreme opposite of that is clay, which does not drain well. There are settings in between this for a mixture of soils as well.
  • Slope: When an area has a large hill or slopped area that is irrigated, the water tends to run off before it has time for it to penetrate the soil or it is over watered and the there is run off. When slope is programmed in, the controller usually does two short cycles allowing the soil absorb the water and in turn grass to grow properly.
  • More/Less: This allows us to program for areas of full sun or heavily shaded areas. We can fin tune a system by using this feature.

Weather Station

The second part of the smart controller is the weather station. This device records temperatures and rain fall. This device is installed on site and is weather specific to its current location. This is important because many times it could be raining 5 miles away and the site where the controller is located gets nothing.

The weather station sends temperatures controller every 3 to 5 minutes and has a rain sensor mounted on top. The temperature is crucial in smart irrigation technology. This allows the controller to know how hot or cold it is so it can take evaporation in to consideration. Example: if you have a an average temperature of 90 degrees with no rain fall for three day, the controller will want to irrigate longer per cycle or come on more days ( if allowed by your city).

If you had an average temperature of 65 degrees, the controller may only need to water for a short period of time or not at all due to evaporation or lack of.

How It Works:

The controller takes the six constants that are listed above and the two variables, which are ambient temperature and rain fall to complete a mathematical equation. With this information the controller then determines how long each zone needs to run. We no longer need to guess on run time. On a traditional controller a person my program sprays for 30 minutes and rotors for an hour. In most cases this is a waste of water. Most soil can only obtain 1 of water per hour.
